Faux-Art, like forgeries, can of course be distinguished
through the use of ultraviolet black light, infrared
photography, and X-rays. Instrumental analyses may reveal
anachronisms in a work of art, and techniques such as
carbon-14 dating, thermo-luminescence dating, and dendro-chronology
(tree-ring dating) are all helpful in determining the
actual origins of a piece. The best detector of any
forgery is generally the trained human eye. For example,
a banker who is thoroughly familiar with printed currency
can detect counterfeit money just by casual scrutiny,
just as a fraudulent signature on a check is glaringly
obvious when compared with a true signature. However,
by mimicking the exact techniques - down to the very
brushstroke - used by the masters, Donde's team of Faux-artists
creates work nearly impossible to detect by simple observation.
